I loved the setting: Minnesota in 1904 and the cover was perfect for a book of this genre. This book was recently entered and was a BRONZE MEDAL WINNER in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards. Charming silhouettes provide previews of coming attractions for each chapter and the story moves along at a pace to ensure that the reader will want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next! Though I am clearly not the target audience for the book, being a gentleman of a certain age, I truly enjoyed the story and recommend it without reservation to readers, young and old alike. The book contains tense moments, humor, and an exciting climax. Esme more than makes up for her short stature with spunk and intelligence. At the heart of the story is Esme, a vertically-challenged, 11-year old growing up in trying circumstances in Minnesota in 1904. The writing in Esme Dooley is both beautiful enough to satisfy adults and direct enough to be readily accessible to younger readers. ![]() Hail exploded from the starless sky and the silver wind sang wildly.” – so begins this lovely story of adventure and friendship. And no one, not even the old-timers, had ever seen its like.
