![]() ![]() Without spoiling the ending, I will say this. ![]() Sometimes because of a couple of boneheaded decisions by the characters. There were somethings I could see coming, it was almost like Latimer set them up as false sense of security so that I would be doubly blindsided by those things I definitely DID NOT see coming. Doing what was stigmatized as wrong, deemed evil by the majority- could it sometimes be the only way to do what ultimately had to be done? It wasn’t always so simple- black magic being evil. Latimer had her own spin on how their magic worked and provided an explanation The lines that separated black magic was especially well thought out and gave readers something to reflect on. The magic system wasn’t just …like… here… witches. Never does the heaviness of these themes take away from a book boasting the thrill of witches, gods, black magic and witch hunters. ![]() ![]() She explores them without fear, but with thoughtfulness and honesty. Latimer doesn’t just bring important themes to the table. Latimer has delivered a plot driven story filled with all the fun stuff! Ancient gods? YES! Family secrets? YES! Black magic? YES! And all rooted in Irish Mythology. If Witches of Ash and Ruin is any sign? It looks like it will be a very good year, indeed.Į. They are back! This year is promising all the witchery and bitey. ![]() ![]() ![]() I didn’t have the endurance to sit through, “And so-and-so begat so-and-so, who begat so-and-so, who begat …” A million tiny origin stories that never got fleshed out enough to hold my interest. Why should I approach this one any differently? I dutifully read about twenty pages of Genesis and gave up. Maybe you’re not supposed to read the Bible chronologically, but I was a novel reader I read all books back to front. I kept a little notebook with me so I could write down my thoughts and questions, but I didn’t have any thoughts or questions. I’d wait until my two triplet sisters left our bedroom and pull out my Bible like reading it was somehow shameful. But I’d never actually read it outside Sunday school classrooms. Carrying the book to church on Christmas and Easter had always made me feel like a grownup I’d press its white-leather cover against my chest the way TV teenagers held their schoolbooks and run my fingertips against its soft, gold-edged pages during the sermon. When I was about eight or nine, I swore to God that I would read my entire Precious Moments Bible. ![]() ![]() ![]() Egoff Book Prize, 2010 Honor Book, Canadian Library Association Young Adult Book of the Year 2010 ![]() His friends’ code of silence makes it difficult to find out what happened, but Phoenix is determined to unravel the mystery and save her brother.
